Is a WhatsApp receptionist safe?

The honest answer to the question every owner asks first: what actually happens to my number, my chats and my customers when I let an assistant help out?

It's a fair thing to be wary about. Your business number is your livelihood, and the idea of an AI touching it can feel like handing over the keys. So here is the plain version, with nothing dressed up: you keep your number, you keep your chats, and you can switch the whole thing off in two taps whenever you like.

How it actually connects

A WhatsApp assistant links to your account the same way WhatsApp Web or a second phone does. You've probably done it already, scanning a code on your laptop to read messages on the big screen. This is the same linked-device feature, built into WhatsApp itself.

Nothing gets moved, copied out or handed to a stranger. It's the same number, the same app and the same chats you already have. The assistant simply becomes another linked device that can read a new message and reply, exactly like your laptop can. WhatsApp keeps its usual end-to-end encryption in place the whole time.

Two ways to run it, and the one honest trade-off

Here's the part most people selling you this won't say out loud, so we will. There are two ways to put Dobbie on WhatsApp, and they're a straight choice between easy and bulletproof.

Test it on your own number. The simplest way, and how most people start. Dobbie links to the WhatsApp you already use, like a second device, and you keep everything: same number, same app, same chats. The honest catch is that replying to customers automatically isn't something WhatsApp officially signs off on, so there's a small chance it could take exception to automation on a personal line. It's rare, you'd see it coming, and you can unplug in two taps. But we're not going to pretend the risk is zero, because it isn't.

Or run it on a dedicated number in Meta. If your main line is too precious to put anywhere near that, we set you up a separate number the official way, through Meta's own business system. No ban risk, fully above board. The trade-off is that it's a fresh number that lives with Dobbie rather than as a normal WhatsApp on your phone, so it's the route for people who want belt-and-braces over convenience.

Most owners try it on their own number and plenty stay there. If you'd lose sleep over the risk, take the dedicated one. Either way it's your call, and we'll tell you straight which we'd pick for a business like yours.

The worries owners actually have

These are the real questions people ask before they'll let anything near their phone. Straight answers to each.

Do I lose my number?

No. Your number stays yours, on your phone, in your name. Linking an assistant doesn't transfer, port or replace anything. If you walked away tomorrow you'd still have the same number you started with.

Can I still reply myself?

Yes, always. The moment you open a chat and start typing, the assistant steps aside and lets you take over. You're never locked out of your own conversations. Think of it as a receptionist who goes quiet the second you pick up.

Who can see my customers' messages?

They stay in your WhatsApp, where they already are. The assistant reads a message to answer it, the same way you would, but your conversations aren't sold, shared or handed to anyone else. Nothing about your customers is the product here.

Can I switch it off?

Any second you want. It disconnects the same way any linked device does: open WhatsApp, go to Settings, then Linked Devices, and tap to remove it. Two taps and it's gone. No phone call, no cancellation maze, no waiting on hold.

Does it talk to my mates and regulars?

It's set up for new enquiries, not your existing relationships. The idea isn't to put a robot between you and the people you already know. It's to catch the stranger who messages at 9pm while you're mid-job, so that lead doesn't go cold before you've had a chance to see it.

The guardrails that keep you out of trouble

A good setup is built to not embarrass you. The two things that get owners in bother are quoting a price and promising a time, so a sensible assistant does neither. It won't invent a number for a job it hasn't seen, and it won't promise you'll be there by four. It gathers the name, the job and how urgent it is, then hands that to you so you make the call.

And you're never in the dark. Every conversation happens in your own WhatsApp, live, in front of you. You can scroll back through anything it said at any time. There's no hidden inbox and no separate app holding your chats hostage. What it does, you see.

So, is it safe?

Safe enough that the honest limits are worth stating plainly, including the real trade-off above: your own number is the easy way in, a dedicated number in Meta is the bulletproof one, and you pick which fits. Beyond that, your number and your chats stay yours, nothing is sold, and you can pull the plug in seconds. It's not magic and it's not a trick, it's a helpful pair of hands on the messages you'd otherwise miss, with you in charge the whole time.
